For the second successive year Emmanuel had to settle for runner-up medals in the Derby City Challenge Cup at the Moorways Stadium and again they lost out to the League Champions. Emmanuel began well with a fine volley from Walker whistling past the Toton post but it was Toton who then had an excellent chance and it took a wonderful save from Day to keep the scores level. Emmanuel came back well and with Aning outstanding at centre-forward and Smithson influential on the left Emmanuel went close on two or three occasions and had a loud shout for a penalty turned down. However, it was Toton who scored from two Emmanuel errors and suddenly Emmanuel had a mountain to climb. They were not, though, daunted and produced another15-minute spell when they dominated, but Pownall's volley flew just past the post, Etherington's header was cleared off the line, and Toton survived a goalmouth scramble. So, Emmanuel went back to the changing rooms still two-down. The second-half saw Emmanuel begin well and again they looked the more likely to score but Toton hit them on the break and produced a top-class finish to make it 3-0. Emmanuel were now chasing the game which meant that Riman and Arme and Tyrer had to fight for their lives at the back and this they did quite superbly. Indeed, with Large making things tick in midfield and Lewis lively on the left Emmanuel enjoyed another dominant spell and when Pownall produced two brilliant runs to set up first Sweet and then Sharp it took two top-class saves from the Toton keeper to keep Emmanuel out. It was, then, Toton who lifted the enormous Challenge Cup but Emmanuel, with a whole team of u17s, will be back next year.
