CATHEDRAL RELIEF SERVICE
Who we are … Cathedral Relief Service was established in 1971 in the aftermath of the Bangladesh war, to undertake emergency relief measures among refugees who came to Calcutta in thousands.In 1974, CRS was registered under the West Bengal Societies Act, and has over the years moved from it’s role as a relief and charitable organization to one of the leading development agencies in West Bengal.
What we do … CRS attempts to tackle the issues of poverty, poor health, lack of education, unemployment, illiteracy, lack of awareness of rights and responsibilities, status of children and women in society, marginalisation and children in difficult circumstances through its Total Education Programme. The Total Education Programme consists of the Health, Education and Women’s Empowerment Programmes, which CRS runs in the slums of Calcutta.
CRS also networks with different NGO’s working in the same field to learn from each others experiences and build solidarity on issues of common interest.
Advocacy and campaigning are also undertaken to impact decisions at the policy level in the areas of education, child rights, health and women’s issues.
