It was a dress-rehearsal for Derby City League Cup Final as Emmanuel took on top-of-the league Toton on Saturday. Emmanuel began well and could easily have scored in thirty seconds as Smithson went close but it was Toton who settled more quickly, and Arme and Riman at the heart of the Emmanuel defence and Day behind them all had to be at their very best. Toton did, though, take the lead following a free kick. This woke the church club up who gradually worked their way back into the game as Schad began to get a grip in midfield, Pownall menaced the Toton back four, and full-backs Tyrer and Cole overlapped well Indeed, Emmanuel very nearly leveled the scores as Sweet first had a left-foot shot well saved after a brilliant Walker flick and then hit the bar with a rasping drive. The second half was very much an end-to-end affair with both teams threatening but again it was Toton who scored and again from a free-kick. Emmanuel, though, responded brilliantly and soon got their reward as Sweet's free kick was deflected in by a Toton defender. With 20 minutes to go Emmanuel threw everything at Toton and hit the bar twice more - once from a Watkiss header following a brilliant Lewis free kick and once from the skilful Sharp. Just as it looked like Emmanuel might get a draw Toton broke away and were given a penalty from which they scored. Emmanuel then kicked off only for the referee to blow immediately for full-time. The Cup Final on Sat April 24 will be interesting.
Day; Tyrer, Arme, Riman, Cole (Watliss); Sharp (Frutuoso), Schad, Sweet, Smithson (Lewis); Walker, Pownall.
