Man of the Match: Tom S (Goalkeeper – fantastic decision making for the first game back)
Compared with last year’s opening day 17-0 mauling at the hands of Allestree, Saturday’s 5-2 reverse felt like a victory.
After a Summer of electronic games, junk food and TV watching our band of merry men popped along to Derby Road playing fields for the opening league footy game.
The lads clearly hadn’t forgotten everything over the Summer and it wasn’t long before they were indulging in their favourite party piece – the badly defended corner. Just to prove that the first one they let in wasn’t a fluke they let in 2 more before the halftime break.
I watched in growing horror from the touchline. I can’t face the thought of seeing another corner before next weeks game at Belper and after the match I left home and moved into a completely spherical house.
In between the corners we actually played some really good passing football and it felt like a bit of a travesty that we were 3-0 down at halftime.
In the second half the lads showed the fighting spirit that is so often their hallmark. Although we struggled to turn the endless pressure into clear cut chances two of last season’s top marksmen (Ryan & James) eventually got the goals our pressure had deserved and a comeback looked a possibility. It wasn’t to be and a goalkick from the Hall of Horrors helped to see Chellaston home.
It’s a mark of how far we’ve come that the result was disappointing. But aspects of the performance were very pleasing and we’ll have another crack next week (if I can find the exit door in this spherical house).
